Your description of Koudelka reminds of a dear friend, (I'll call him Max here), who for many years, has taken the path less travelled. He made a ton of dough early on in his career, started buying properties which he would then sell for a profit, married late to a younger woman who had a child who is significantly challenged with autism. The marriage broke up and the divorce decreed that my friend, a gallavanter extraordinaire by nature it would seem, would have sole possession of his daughter for 100 days of every year. The difficulties of raising their child are enormous. But my friend did not shy from the challenge. He took large strides to find the best help possible. He make himself fully available to his child. He got to know her, despite the difficulties of communicating with her. It turns out she has special abilities to see and remember events and pictures that "normal" people lack. For those 100 days he is completely devoted to her well-being. Everything else is off limits. But on those 265 other days of the year he has embraced the Koudelka-esque ramblings of a care free traveler, albeit, one without the fear of going hungry. He seeks out the unknown places, the areas not found in Fodors, or Rick Steves travels. Like your photographer he starts conversations with complete strangers. He is genuinely curious and seeks the full spectrum of what's.....out there. He can also be quite maddening because of his insatiable attraction to the next bright shiny object. A fascinating, frustrating, envy inducing, Dean Moriarty-esque original. He takes some pretty good photos as well, but not quite ready for Life Magazine, wherever THAT went!! Thanks for your post!!
