Perhaps you know, but Matti Friedman has just written a book about this moment of Leonard Cohen in the Sinai during the war: https://mattifriedman.com/who-by-fire/
Beautifully done! Brings clarity to a complex topic, especially important for those full on converts to scientific materialism who believe it's an either/or proposition. Coming from a medical family, I wish there's been a bit more of this "both and" perspective in the air.
Growing up I was a big fan of Leonard Cohen’s music, so so many brilliant songs with soul. His last album touched me deeply. You Want It Darker, a song on his last album was very beautiful and calming to me in his acceptance of death. Such an incredible musician! I just received his book “I’m Your Man”, and didn’t all the details of this story and his life so this was very interesting, and even more so overlapping the perspective from a doctor. I feel like I am seeing constant random and fast occurring loss as I get older, so I can relate to the doctors perspective you discuss but am not intertwining the enlightenment/ spiritual aspect. Probably doctors become more jaded, and less enlightened due to little personal connection with those dying. Leonard Cohen wanted to feel the pain, love, and bravery of it all, and feeling this he created art, and passion for life and death.
this article really spoke to me. reflection and returning are key aspects of the ten days. and only by examining all of life/our life can we begin to get there.
My Darling Bertie:
I am really enjoying all your writings! You really do express yourself so well!
Thank you so much for sending them all to me.
Much to Jeff's disappointment...Leonard Cohen is one of my most favorite artists!
I love him...such a crazy sexy voice!
Very interesting to hear all these details on his life!

Thank you for this. It also reminded me of one of my favorite performances of Leonard Cohen’s.
